From a desk lunch to an ordered dinner, always go for the three S’s:

•Salad. There are so many Just Salads– or Sweetgreens–type places around these days. It really has been a huge shift in fast food and we should all be grateful we can go into the corner lunch place and get a beautiful chopped salad with a huge combination of veggies and protein sources. I mean, kale is as common as regular lettuce. If you don’t have a salad place near you, you can always order a salad at Wendy’s or the deli.

•Soup. It can be kind of awkward to order a soup for lunch and take it to the park to eat. You need a flat surface for the bowl, and a spoon. So much easier to get a big sandwich that you can eat with one hand while you push your kid on the swing. BUT—if you can deal with it, soup is full of veggies and vitamins that have been boiled together, just waiting to get into your body and flood you with nutrients. It’s filling because of the liquid, so you feel full on fewer calories.

•Sandwich—hold the bread. You don’t want to get a big hero with a loaf of bread. But a wrap sandwich is a decent option for lunch or a quick meal. What I do is take it apart, and rewrap it with half the tortilla. They always overwrap those things. It’s like double wrapping your Christmas presents. Why? It’s a waste. If possible, get a sandwich that is wrapped in lettuce leaves. It might not be on the menu, but just ask for it and see what happens.
